The Orphans & Vulnerable Children (OVC) Project supports children and families in Kakamega, Western Kenya through food programs, education support, and sustainable entrepreneurial initiatives.

The Challenge

Founded by Sister Agnes, the project began in response to the growing number of families of  vulnerable children within the community lacking access to food, shelter, education, and protection.

Many children within the region face severe food insecurity, unstable living conditions, and limited access to education. Without proper support systems, vulnerable children remain at risk of exploitation, trafficking, and forced displacement across nearby borders. Families also face ongoing economic hardship, limiting opportunities for long-term stability and self-reliance. The project was created to provide not only immediate care and protection, but also sustainable pathways toward education, food security, and future opportunity.

Together, Sister Agnes and Sister Pamela continue building systems that support children not only through immediate care, but through long-term opportunity, mentorship, and community support.

EDUCATION

To create greater self-sufficiency, Sister Agnes developed agribusiness initiatives including poultry farming, pig raising, and crop cultivation. Eggs, poultry, maize, beans, and livestock help feed vulnerable children while generating income for school fees, uniforms, supplies, and vocational opportunities. Educational loans also support students pursuing nursing and healthcare training, creating a cycle of support for future students.

Entrepreneurship

Sister Pamela joined the initiative to support healthcare education, project oversight, and long-term sustainability. As a trained nurse and healthcare educator, she brings expertise in supporting vulnerable populations and community initiatives. Her latest initiative is a knitting program creating employment for deaf adolescent girls, who are trained by widows to produce sweaters for school uniforms and other educational institutions.

Long-Term Vision

The long-term vision of the OVC Project is to create sustainable systems that provide children and families with access to food, education, healthcare, vocational opportunities, while strengthening long-term economic resilience within the community. By combining immediate care with sustainability initiatives, the project aims to help families of vulnerable children build stable, independent, and hopeful futures within their own communities.
